The school caters for students aged 11-19 with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Severe Learning Disabilities (SLD) and Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD).The school is very small in size, with only 65 pupils across the Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and Post-16 departments. The school is situated across a couple of sites within Lambeth and facilities a state of the art hydrotherapy pool, sensory room, performing arts studio, life skills studio and overhead tracking hoists.The roleAs an SEN Teacher, you would be working in the Key Stage 4 department, planning and delivering English, Maths, PSHE, Computing, PE and Science lessons. Class sizes are small and you would be teaching up to 6 students and managing 3 full time TAs. Students at this level are working at high P levels and a large proportion of the curriculum you would be teaching is based on providing skills for life.The successful SEN Teacher would be expected to differentiate lessons in order to meet the needs of individual children within the class. You would be writing personal education and health plans for the students and so the school is looking for someone highly organised and who possesses excellent communication skills in order to monitor progress and provide regular feedback to parents/carers, therapists and senior leadership.Although behaviour of the students at this school has been recognised by Ofsted as being Outstanding, many students do exhibit challenging behaviour and so this SEN school is looking for a teacher with excellent behaviour management experience.Due to the needs of the children, the successful SEN Teacher would need to maintain a safe, calm and supportive environment around the school and experience in using communication aids such as PECS and Makaton would be advantageous however the school provides excellent training at the start of each term in manual handling techniques, safeguarding and communication techniques.
